"Shadow of Winter's Chill"
8" x 10" on Strathmore cold press paper. It's been too long since
I made the time to participate! Cast Shadows is one of my favorite subjects.
So here is my submission done from a photo I took on a recent cross country
ski jount at a neighbor's house.

"1145 Cass Street"
Size: 11 by 15 inches. Painted on Arches 140
# watercolor paper with Graham watercolors paints.
This was really a very fun project. Only the shadows are painted and in this
case they tell the whole story. They are so important to a painting and we
so often forget this. Thank you Maury for this great project and I'm looking
for your next one.

"Afternoon Stop"
Back in 2006 I was visiting my daughter in
Jacksonville Oregon. One afternoon we were out strolling when I came across
this tandem bike parked next to a brick wall.(see attached) It captured my
eye so I snapped this photo. It sat in my files until now. I remembered the
shadow is what really caught my eye. As I pulled it up on my computer and
studied the photo, working with various compositions what I settled on was
the shadow, not the bike!
The idea was to capture just a portion of the tire, thus creating the suggestion,
but the main subject is the shadow itself...
Any bike commuter or leisure cyclist can relate to the "Afternoon Stop"
for a cup of coffee, quart of milk or loaf of bread.
The painting is 16X20" watercolor on clayboard.

"Untitled"
I've painted this scene several times...it's
fun and easy to paint. It's from a CD by Terry Harrison( I think).

"Cracker House"
Went to Florida State Fair and they have an area with old Cracker houses and people in costumes making candles, blacksmith etc. This is one of the houses. The cast shadows were everywhere because of the old oak and moss not to mention the sun happen to be in the right place. If you are ever in Florida in February check out State Fair. Lots of fun and do not plan on staying on your diet everything is deep fried! Painted on Arches 140 CP with American Journey paints.
Charlie Morison
This is a painting on a 9" x 12" watercolor pad. The subject was from a picture I took last year at an Elderhostel two week painting session in Glen Arbor, Michigan. One group was watercolor artists and the other was photographers. Each morning we would have a demo from one of the two artists from the CIA (The Cleveland Institute of Art, not the other one!) Then we would scatter to paint in the area or in the two art rooms. The building on the left is the dining room and one of the demos was on the deck outside of the building with the artist's daughter posed leaning against one of the trees. Very interesting two week of painting and meeting other artists from around the country and one from Canada.

"Blue Heron"
This watercolor is from memories of sunsets and memories of the many Great Blue Herons I've seen and photographed in Wyoming and in Colorado. Natures beauty and mystery intrigue me constantly. I hope you will like this simple painting of these beautiful, ungainly birds.

"Green Buttons"
The green buttons are part of a collection I have that I decided to paint in this format. The paper is Arches 140 pound cold press and I used Daniel Smith watercolors. Some of the buttons are from my mother's collection and some were purchased in a small tailor's shop in Amioun, Lebanon.

"Earl At Rest"
4x4 inches
acrylic on mat board
I have been painting miniatures this month, and decided to interpret an old photograph of my grandfather resting on the back porch for this project.
Nina Blatt
"Untitled"
My painting is 13.5 x10.5. I use Arches 140 lb cold press, and W&N paints. The cast shadows are from another sunflower, above and unseen by the viewer. I have been gathering cast shadows for a few years, but have never tackled one. I tried several before settling on his one. The others were more difficult, but I plan on doing some of them until I get it right.

"Lanai Furniture"
I finished up my painting for cast shadows and once again see how the floor shadows don't look like the filigree of the table top. That is enough for me to want to do this over . I was upset after I painted this and began to read your different Essay writings. There was much knowledge and wisdom to take away from your writings. Like enjoy, relax and not all or not everyone's painting turn out each time. With that recent knowledge I submit my Lanai Furniture in the Sun. This was done on Arches cold press 140# paper and Windsor Newton watercolors paints.

"Shell Shadows"
I have attached my submittal for this quarter
on Arches CP #140, 11"X15" painted with W/N watercolors.
I placed the shells on my drafting table and provided light from the back
and the right side. Looking forward to the next project.

"Clayburn Village"
Here's my painting for cast shadows. I actually did three, but I'll use this one for the project. It's 10"x10" painted on Arches 140 lb cold press watercolor paper It's titled Keyhole Gate and painted from a photo I took of the gate to an old clay brick foundry in old "Clayburn Village".

"Untitled"
Here is my submission - done on Strathmore 12x12 140 lb. cold press, Loew Cornell paints. To really achieve the very black shadows, maybe I should have used gouache or even done this in acrylic? One sunny January day, these little ceramic scarf-clad penquins cast this happy shadow on a bright yellow wall. I cannot explain it well, but the entire yellow wall appeared in shadow save for this one very bright patch. I was going to leave out the leaf of the plant in front of the window, but I thought maybe it added something to the negative spaces. I've taken a lot of photos of interesting shadows ... sort of a hobby of mine; the hard part was choosing one to paint. I like it because it's mysterious and silly all at once. I know it's late in my time zone...but maybe not in yours!Thanks...

One of my good friends rides his bike down this lane when he is training for a marathon--he shared this image with me--and I took him up on his offer to make a painting of it.
