Susan Rose

"Wabaunsee County"

"Landscape" is what inspires me, part of the reason I love where we live in Kansas. The landscape cries out to be captured in any media. This is a scene from a photo I took not too far from our farm. The rolling hills outlined by short shurbs and trees in the ravines, the dirt road weaves its way to the horizon. Thanks for another fun project, and once again stimulating me out of my slumber to get me to paint!

"Wyoming Barn"

Painting is 13 x 18 inches. I painted this at a recent Barnes & Noble booking signing. It was done in a vertical position on an easel because it was a demonstration. I used a surfactant to increase my wet-on-wet working time to one hour. The surface was then dried and the dry brush detail of Canada geese were quickly added.

"Going Swimming"

This is my painting "Going Swimming" from last Saturday. A group of painters go out on Saturday to paint. This was a cool day with the sound of children having fun at the beach. To the left of the picture is a fenced off area with lifeguards and people actually swimming or standing in the water. What a wonderful day to spend sitting at the beach or even better, painting at the beach.

"Sailing into Buchart"

This is a scene from a small cove at Buchart Gardens near Victoria, Vancouver Island, British Columbia. 7" x 9" on Arches 140# Cold Pressed from my Windsor Newton spit box. Used a 1" flat brush, a #8 round and the little brush that came with the box. (I was pretending to paint "en plein aire" with a small kit I've put together but inside and from a photo;-) The paints that came with the box are student quality so they are pretty pale. I'm trying to use them up and replace them with professional quality. I really like the scene so I may try again with "real" equipment.

Virginia Potter

"Childhood Toys and Sandy Boys"

I enjoy both watercolors and acrylics, depending on my mood. I'm a fast and furious painter, not slowing down until I get to the details. I used Utrecht acrylics on 32 x 36 inch untempered hardboard. I enjoyed painting this one of my two boys at play on Greers Ferry Lake across from Pryor Mountain in the Ozark foothills in Arkansas, where I was born. I blocked it in outdoors, putting in the big shapes while the light was good, then finished it in the studio.

"Untitled"

I've been trying to loosen up and I might have just loosened up a bit too much in this painting, but it was fun and very relaxing. I have to admit that I studied a DVD by artist Geoff Kersey of the U.K because I liked his style and I need all the help I can get. I used Winsor Newton140 cold pressed, and Winsor Newton paints.....lot of wet on wet technique ,and masking for some of the tree trunks.

This summer I am doing a lot of outdoor painting throughout the country side near my home. Most of what I have been doing is in oil, which is a new medium for me. However I did this one especially for your project in my old stand by --- transparent watercolor. This is a wonderful place - many miles along this river is the "Port Huron State Game Area". No houses, man made structures or roads -- only trails where you can walk and enjoy nature. And I must say a popular place for artists. Oh! be sure to take along the bug spray.

Hi Maury, so glad for this challenge! This pond and the gardens were beautiful! Made a great photograph. I was quickly reminded of the dangers of trying to paint from a perfect photo. This is on arches 300lb. paper. 10x14". Paints are Winser Newton. Should have listened when an artist friend suggested I start all over. Would welcome comments.

Judith Silver

"Untitled"

My contribution to the Landscape Project is a painting done from a photograph borrowed from an instructor, Mark Silvers, after taking a course with him. I held on to the photo and was inspired to make an attempt to paint it when I saw the current project. By the way, Mark was a wonderful teacher and I encourage anyone who can to take one of his workshops. For me, the painting is a big step forward, although I feel that some of the darks are a little heavy-handed. It is on hot press paper and is 9 x 13.
I enjoy these projects tremendously. Many thanks.

Attached is 12 x 16 watercolor for the landscape project. Work was done on Arches 140# cold pressed paper. Adam Gauche is a pseudonym with which I sign my paintings. My real name Frank A. Schneider and if you look up the word gauche in the dictionary, you'll undestand the joke.

"A Trio of Aspen"

Here is my entry. Painted on Waterford 140# 11" x 14" paper and transparent watercolors. Used a touch of white gouache on some of the tree limbs. This is a different painting for me as I did not make the birch trees in realistic colors. I like them much better this way.

"The 14th Green"

Found a photo of this golf course in my files and thought it would be a fun landscape painting to do. I just changed the season from the photo, and did it on 14" X 20" Arches Cold Press paper, using Windsor Newton paints. Enjoyed the project...Wish I could get back into the golf game again!

"The Artists' Island"

This painting was done from a photo I took last summer on a trip to Monhegan Island, frequently referred to as "The Artists' Island". It was an overcast day, so my photo did not have any shadows and I had to invent them. I hope they are believeable. The painting is 15x22 on Arches rough paper.

"Old Bridge"

I hope you don't mind having a complete beginner along for the ride! All the other pictures on this site are awesome so I'm a bit daunted but also very inspired. I just started painting for the first time a few weeks ago having bought David Bellamy's excellent book Watercolour Landscape Course. This painting is from an excercise in David Bellamy's book so I can't take credit for the composition, but I wanted to send it in to your page as it is the first painting I've ever done that I felt I could let other people see!

Carol Haywood

"Canyon"

Being in the middle of settling into a new home and studio, I just today found the time to work on a landscape from my southwestern trip in June and send it to you. Here is "Canyon", done with my usual Arches 300 lb paper, 20 x 14 size, and mostly Winsor Newton transparent, staining watercolors. I especially was drawn to the hazy atmosphere, which reduced most contrasts except for the shaded cliffs. Putting aside my main subject of local boats, to work with different kinds of technical problems and another mood isn't easy. But I find the challenge stimulating. And I truly left part of my soul out there in the Great Basin. You must see it if you haven't, for a unique encounter with landscape and sky.

"Owl Creek Pass"

Owl Creek Pass is southeast of Ridgeway, Colorado, in a section of the San Juan mountain range called the Sawtooths. The severe erosion of the high mountain peaks creates the jagged sawtooth effect. This was painted on Arches 140lb Rough. I use mostly Winsor Newton and Daniel Smith watercolor. The size is 11" x 15".
