"Untitled"

This is a painting of three rakwees. A rakwee is used to make Turkish or Arabic coffee here in Lebanon. The coffee beans, ground to powder, are put into water, boiled and allowed to settle then boiled two more times in the same way before the coffee is served in demitasse size cups. Cardamom and sugar are optional. Daniel Smith paints were used with the predominant colors quin gold and quin burnt orange and the paper was strathmore 140 pound.

Raymond Kelso

"HenRay Tu Kul"

In late 1998, I ask my friend Chuck Miller if he would help Me build a Giraffe from metal.
I wanted the giraffe to be 100% Copper and he is except for the four bolts at the knees, which
is Brass. All parts are welded.

We started with a chalk outline on the concrete floor of Chuck's shop
and ended 4 week-ends later with a 9 foot tall copper Giraffe.

A 5 year old girl came in the shop & told her mom he was TOO COOL!
So, his name is "HenRay Tu Kul"!

He greets visitors at the entrance of our home, gets lots of comments
& the good part, doesn't eat much!

Size: 7 ½ X 9 ½ inches

"Metal Toad"

I finished my "metal toad" this afternoon and am sending him on to you. He is painted on Strathmore cold press 140lb watercolor paper. The dimensions are 12x18. I used Daniel Smith extra fine watercolors. I found several metal sculptures on line and rearranged them into this scene. Having had many toads and frogs in my classroom over the years, I recognize the "gunner" position they tip-top into just before attacking their unsuspecting victim.

"Steppin Out"

Here is my project for this quarter. It is on Arches 140# cold press using Daniel Smith paints. It was an interesting attempt, as I always have a problem trying to portray shiny surfaces.

"Under the Hot Australian Sun"

I haven't submitted for a while so I thought I better get going again. I am working with Gouache and this is my first full painting with it. Works a bit different than transparent watercolor but I think I like it. This is on a quarter sheet of Saunders 140# cold press paper and Da Vinci Gouache paints. I am a bit bold painting a rusty truck to put on the master truck painters website but I was attracted to it. It is painted from a photograph by an online friend Wendy, in Brisbane, Australia.

"Metal Allies"

The metal alloys are: a brass teapot, a silver teapot and a copper watering can with brass spout and handle. (Of course the overachiever has to do one of each). The brass teapot was a teapot my father brought back from the Orient when he was in the navy. The silver teapot is an heirloom with an engraved "B" on the other side for our family name. The copper watering can was also my grandmother's (I don't know where from). And it is sitting on a brass trivet, of which you can see only one 'leg'.
The silver teapot received some damage from something, and part of it's 'foot' is missing.
It is 9 x 13 on Arches 140 cold press paper.

"Untitled"

This sign and tractor is in a yard not too far from me. The owner was nice enough to let me photograph it and the tractor, only wish the painting had come out better. Had a real block when it came to this challenge and not too happy with the results. 8" x 11" Arches 140 cp and American Journey watercolors.

"Mississippi Pipe"

This painting is based on an image I took at the National Mississippi River Museum in Dubuque, IA. I think this contraption is part of a steamboat engine. Anyhow, I liked the look of the bright sunlight on the side with the cast shadows. I take my time with all my paintings these days, and this one took its share as I worked on it over 3 or 4 weekends. I just kept building form on all the little objects, eventually laying in the cast shadows. The painting is a 22" x 30" on Arches CP. I use Winsor Newton and Daniel Smith watercolors.

"Coffee Time"

"Untitled"

During the rather hot days in early summer I felt a six pack of cold beer would be a pleasant solution to my discomfort. I went out and got a six pack and used my pewter mug made in England and with the inscription of the shield of the Hudson Bay Company on the side and the years 1670 - 1970. As I was enjoying the drink I thought I should do a painting of that mug. Needless to say I was surprised to see the subject for this period was metal.

"Stinson Stove"

This is an old cast iron cook stove, with many parts missing. I photographed it a few years ago after seeing it sitting in a field, still looking chipper, if dilapidated. I know the lands' owner and she told me the stove was left as is at the site of a homestead. The era is around 1910. The history of the stove would be so interesting. Size: 9" x 7". Painted on Strathmore cold press with Grumbacher watercolor.

"Introducing the American Horse"

This is titled "Introducing the American Horse". It is a rendering done from a file photo of the unveiling of the "American Horse". The Horse is 25 feet tall in bronze and is the twin of the original Horse in Milan Italy. It was sculpted based on plans by Davinci that he never complete for lack of bronze. The American Horse is showcased and sponsored by Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park in Grand Rapds MI. Meijer Gardens is spectacular for those lucky enough to get to Grand Rapids. I have been there several times. The Horse is magnificent. In the scene I painted Fred Meijer is speaking from the podium while dignataries look on (the artist is the lady sitted middle). I deliberately painted the people with no features so as to depict the event and give scale to the horse without distracting the viewer eye from the clear center of attention. I am pleased, I hope you like it. Painted on 185 lb paper with Daniel Smith paints including his Primatek Bronzite mixed with Mayan Blue and Apetit green on the Horse.

This was a fun project. I have wanted to paint the horse for some time. You gave me a good reason. Thanks as always for doing this.

"French Pot"

French Pot - This is a rendering of a brass pot that was in a little hole in the wall in a gite we rented in Paray le Monial in Burgundy this summer. Painted on Dalbe Aquarelle, 31 x 41 cm, 140 lb Rough using Winsor Newton and Daniel Smith paints. As much fun working on the stone as it was on the metal! Thanks again for being out there!

Geraldine Ward

"Untitled"

This very old film can has been lying around our garage. I fell in love with the beautiful "wabi sabi" nature of the rusting process. When deciding to photograph it to paint, was pleasantly surprised by the blue sky reflecting in the yet unrusted mirror finish on the "spokes". I approached this with mostly wet on wet, spattering, as well as alcohol and salt, with a bit of glitter (I know...but I couldn't resist!)to represent the still untouched flecks of bright metal. Strathmore 140 cold press 12x12 paper. Cotman paints, also experimenting with the concept of "chromatic black", which I had not heard of before. I loved this project and hope I was able to convey at least some of what I feel when I admire this rusty old can, which I am oddly unable to throw away!
