Welcome to the October -- December 2005 Project. The theme for this project will be "Portrait." The painting you submit must be painted specifically for this project and be watermedia. The subject must be a human portrait, although it doesn't have to be a formal presentation. If you envision a painting of your friend sitting in the kitchen and talking, that would work just fine. Submit your images to me via email or snail mail. Send title, size, and comments about the paintings and painting process. Let me know if it is OK to link your email address when I add your image to the project page. The project end date is December 31, 2005.

"Bonnard"
I should like to add today's painting of a Pierre Bonnard portrait for the 'portrait project'. I used a black and white photo from young Bonnard. It is a quartersheet on drawing paper 160gsm. This is because I printed the preliminary drawing, so I can make several exercises without drawing again. You can see the photo here:

Thanks and kind regards.

"SARA"
This portrait is of a friend's daughter. It 12" x 16"
and was completed on 300# paper with Holbien paints. I think the secrets to
completing a painting of this nature are attention to detail and patience. With
the primary colors on the bear, jumper, and shirt, I had to begin with the bare
minimum in skin tone and make adjustments as the strong colors washed out the
face and arm.
Thanks for the challenge.

"Charlestown Fisherman"
Here is my painting of a portrait for this quarter's
project. It's been quite a while since I did one, and this was a good challenge
for me. "Charlestown Fisherman" was painted on 140# Arches cold press
paper, 10"x14", using Winsor Newton paints: quinacridone red, permanent
rose, quinacridone gold, cobalt blue, manganese blue hue, and sepia.
Using lighter-weight paper than usual, I did not use an underpainting of color
washes but started with a watercolor pencil outline without much detail. On
his face and shirt there is more than one layer of paint in some areas.
This man saw me taking photos of the fishing boats at Charlestown, Oregon, in
summer 2004 and wanted to know my business on the docks. After he saw he had
managed to worry me a little, he then turned very pleasant. He asked me if I
wanted to take his picture in front of his boat, which I did, with this result.
I have placed his figure at a distance in at least two other pictures. But I
found the shape of his features and his complexion so intriguing, I thought
he was also worthy of a portrait.

"Wrinkles of Sagacity"
I made this painting from a picture of and old chinese man. His sharp eyes reveal his wisdom and experience gained over a lifetime. I tried to capture some of this in my painting. The painting was done on 11" x 15" handmade paper sheet.

Three weary hikers on the John Muir Trail pause
to reflect on the exhausting climb behind them, the glory of the High Sierras,
and the long trek ahead of them to Canada. Painted with Sennelier and Daniel
Smith on Arches 140#, 12-1/2" x 9-1/2".

"Frank, My Son, My Hero"

"Untitled"
My submission is a painting of Georgia O'Keeffe as a young woman and as an older woman. I painted from photos in a book I have. It is a painting I'll hang in my studio just for me so I hope it is ok that I copied from someones photos of her. I painted one of her flower paintings in the background and swirled up some color to connect it all. It was painted on a half sheet of D'Arches with transparent watercolor. I haven't submitted a painting in a long while. Hope to be more active in each project. I love seeing what everyone comes up with.

"American Coal Miner"
On Arches paper 140, Davinci paints, 11x14 size. This was a very good project for me as I never atempted to paint the portrait. My reference was from a miners group B/W photo from the 30's with no credits given. Feed back is always welcome.

"Darrell"
Darrell was a model at our Art Club. What great timing -----To have a model and a watercolor assignment at the same time. This was painted on Arches 140 # paper with Winsor-Newton paints. Size is 11 by 15 inches.
Jamie Hamilton
"Heather and Papa"
Painted on Arches Hot-Pressed 140 # paper using Winsor Newton and Holbein paints - 11"x 9". This was a very challenging assignment as portraits are not my strength. This was my third attempt at this project, and it finally turned out pretty well. This is a portrait of my dear daughter Heather, and her precious grandfather, Joe. I hope to continue making improvements in future portrait paintings.

"Me"
This is a self portrait based on a photograph taken of me at a Glenview Art League Art Demo. Either I was giving some serious thought to what I had seen; trying to remember where I parked my car; or I just woke up! Let's title the painting "Me". It was painted on 140 pound Arches paper, 1/4 sheet.

"Gateway"
This portrait is of a Guatemalan woman selling her grandchild's woven fabric. I entitled it, "Gateway". It is done on 140# cold press watercolor paper with various brands of paints. I was pleased with the way I was able to achieve the stone work with a minimum of paint coverage. Any critiques out there?
