"Untitled"

This is a painting from a photograph I took at a city south west of St. Louis. I was visiting my daughter at Washington University. We went to a winery and took the tour and then went out on the patio where I set up the bottle of wine from the winery and she went to get some food. The painting brings back some great memories.

"The Grail - Holy or Otherwise"

Hello Maury -

I'd like to join in the "Watercolor Project. Sign me up. A great idea, thanks. I'm an ex-potter, ex-graphic artist and ex-pat from Idaho (your neighbor to the north) now living in Fortaleza, Brasil. I've painted on the only paper available, Montval 140# with the only watercolors I could find, Pentel with the only brush for sale a #12 (I think) round. Size, I think is about 20 cm x 25 1/2 cm.

I've evolved from painting with procion dyes on fabric, to water color glazes on clay to water color on paper My kingdom for some Arches 140# paper, and WN paint and brushes. When I came it wasn't to live, but how can I leave this wonderful place.

I thought about naming this "In the beginning...there were grapes" or "Trinity", but finally settled on "The Grail - Holy or Otherwise". I welcome any questions about my wonderfully crazy life in Brasil.

"Red and Blue"

Here's my 'Wine' submission. In my opinion there's not much to beat a nice bottle of red and some good cheese. I really enjoyed this challenge, especially painting the cheese. As a beginner I'm still finding wet in wet very difficult, not to mention unpredictable! I painted this on Montval 140lb cold pressed paper 12" x 16" with Windsor & Newton paints.

"Wine, Wine, Wine That Makes You Feel So Fine"

This painting was done on watercolor canvas with Winson-Newton transparent paints.
It certainly paints differently than Arches paper. In fact it is quite an experience. If you are unhappy with anything - just wash it off. I also found that the colors lighten greatly as they dry. You put heavy color down and leave it alone until dry - then with care you can delicately go over it or add more paint. The texture of the canvas gives a unique effect to the painting. When you are finished - spray with acrylic and frame. No glass is needed unless you mount it under a matte. The watercolor canvas comes either stretched on wooden stretchers or in a pad. If in a pad -- it needs to be supported by a backing as it is cloth canvas.

"Untitled"

I found your website by accident a week ago. I like the idea of feedback (something that it is hard to get from other art type people). Even if I don't submit to each new category, I will definitely check in to see how people handle the subject. I was an art major in college back in the 60s. The war and then a family got in the way. Now I am trying to get some watercolor skills. I looked at the images in the wine topic and they all seemed traditional in subject so I thought I would go alittle 21st Century. The nice part about this subject was I could drink from the subject at the same time. Take it from me and don't put your wine glass to close to your water jar.

"Untitled"

Several problems with this painting, especially the folds in the cloth. Would love to find a tutorial on this subject. Overall though I think it's not too bad, and with a lot of practice and experimenting hopefully I'll come up with a decent painting. Must tell you that I made a new friend as a result of your painting project. Her name is Dorothy Wagner, and by e-mailing her I found that she lives just across the St. Clair river in the USA. I had a a lovely visit with her art group in Port Huron. I used Arches 140 cold press paper and an assortment of paints. A very Merry Christmas to you and all participating artists.

"Basics"

I have enjoyed watching the paintings as each appeared. Still nothing came to me, perhaps it is because I do not drink. While I love looking at different wine bottles and labels my muse left whenever I tried to paint the wine project. One my way to work the idea of basics came to me. I usd 140 pound smooth paper and with a fixture of Daler Rowney, Winsdor Newton, and DaVinci paints.

"Fonset - Lacour 79"

I have attached my painting for the Oct-Dec 2006 project. The painting was done on W/N CP#140 size 14" X 11" with W/N watercolors and gouache highlights here and there. It was done from an old b/w photo I took many year ago and never got around to painting. As always it's fun seeing all the different styles and compositions. Looking forward to 2007.

Happy Holidays and have a great New Years everyone.

"Wine Barrels"

Thank you so much for the work you put into this project. You have moved me past a "block" therefore I am painting again! "Wine Barrels" is approximately 8x10 inches on Arches cold press (140). I used Windsor-Newton paint. Can't wait for the next project!

"Make Me Into Wine"

I also had a hard time coming up with a painting based on wine. I was looking through Oswald Chambers' book "My Utmost For His Highest" and came across: "God can never make us into wine if we object to the fingers He chooses to use to crush us." I could identify with that. I used Cotman Water Colours Alizarin Crimson, Cobalt Blue and Cadmium Yellow Light on 11" x 15" Kilimanjaro Natural 140 CP.

"Untitled"

Here's my submission for the Wine Project. I've used 140 lb., 9x12 Arches paper and W&N paints. Ach! This is the 3rd rendition of this project, which I started well over a month ago, (the bottle of wine long since gone)! The first bottle looked like a large papaya, and I'm afraid I haven't gotten it quite right yet. I was interested in capturing the reflections bouncing here and there, but I've chosen to call this Enough is Enough, and just send it on. Happy New Year, and thanks for the fun challenges.
