"Autumn's Splendor"
What with the foliage at it's peak here in the Northeast, there were plenty of opportunities to paint for this project. This collection of "Autumn's Splendor" was found right in my own driveway. The squirrels and deer were patiently waiting for me to finish with the acorn but fortunately there are thousands more this year for them to feast on. This was painted on arches #140 paper with my Winsor-nnewton palette and measures about 12" X 10".

A year ago my husband and I drove around Lake Winnebago to enjoy the warm sunny day and changing leaves. This 14"x14" watercolor was an experiment with texture, using a photo I took that day as inspiration. I used 140 Arches cold press paper, and my Winsor Newton paints (lots of new gamboge).

"Autumn Bouquet"
Enclosed is my submission for the "Autumn" project. It is entitled Autumn Bouquet. It is 18" x18" and was painted on Arches 300CP with Winsor and Newton paints. I learned that when painting flowers, get them done first! A little improvising was used when faced with a very dead bunch of flowers.

"North Carolina Leaves"
140 lb Kilimanjaro cold press mix of American Journey, Cotman & Grumbacher paints; Faber Castell super fine black artist pen for stippling. These are actual leaves that I traces around while vacationing in North Carolina. Masked leaves and I then did a Payne's grey wash lifted off in some places with tissue. I bruised the veins in the leaves with the handle of the paint brush, painting the leaves individually. Had to work fast so my leaves did not dry out. The next day when all was dry I spent several hours stippling in the black. This will be my 2007 Thanksgiving card.

"Island Autumn"
"Island Autumn" was painted on a half sheet of 140 Waterford with daVinci paint. Autumn on Whidbey Island is yellow, orange and Green. The Blackberry bushes are turning red and the overcast days are just ahead. Yellow Ochre is a natural for this time of year.

"Yielded to Change"
It seems like ages since I was able to do a "regular" painting. Once again thank you for stirring me into painting something for pure fun! This is an image from photo I took a couple of Autumns ago and I had always been meaning to paint it. That particular Fall I was struck by how the of colors of the various yield signs and road stripes mirrored the vibrancy of the foliage. I took several photos along various roads I traveled. Now I finally painted one of them! I called this 9 x 12 watercolor, "Yielded to Change". Painted with various brands of tube water colors, on Strathmore cold press paper.

"Bountiful"
Bountiful was painted on a full sheet (22 x 30) 140 lb. cold pressed watercolor paper with mostly Holbein watercolors. It is painted from a photograph by Frank Ceravalo, a West Virginia photographer, whose has given me permission to use it as inspiration.

Greetings from Brasil. Autumn is but a faint memory for me. It was never my favorite season. Perhaps my poem says it better than my painting. Montval 140#, #12 non-descript brush. A good Thanksgiving and very merry Christmas to all you wonderful artists.
Autumn's Transition
Cool Autumn winds dance round an old wood
mill,
swirling merrily down through the glenn.
It rushes o'er the creek and up the hill,
Pausing a moment - before moving on again.
Wild geese call across the crisp clean air,
instructing their young to hold the line.
Southward they wing for weather more fair,
Leaving Autumn to usher in Winter on time.
Hoses drained and stored in the shed,
and deck chairs folded ready for storage.
Leafy smoke trails from garden's dried bed,
leaving dark ashes from Summer's sweet foliage.
Autumn falls - Brilliant! As from an artist's brush,
lingering for what seems hardly more than a day.
Then the pallet is cleared with wind's icy rush,
and Autum fades to Winter's monochromatic gray.

Thank you for giving me a reason to try painting this. It was painted on 10x13 Fabriano watercolor block with various Joe Miller and W&N paints. The reference photo was taken in Ontario on a fall vacation.

I've attached my submission for the current Autumn project.. Certainly autumn in the West with mountains turning yellow with Aspen color is a beautiful sight but, nothing matches the brilliant autumns of the Northeast. The different varieties of maples produce all colors from yellow to orange to orange -red to brilliant reds. Actually I had to tune down the color on this country road near my home to make the picture more interesting with a variety of color and value. This a great time of year. The summer warmth has been replaced with cool brisk temperatures - a harbinger of things to come - snow and skiing fun.

The individual autumn leaves, all the colors and variations, fascinate and inspire me. I painted this in a friend's front yard. Her maple tree was breath taking! As I painted the wind came up, and leaves blew every where... in my water and palette, but "my" leaves hung on and I was able to finish them before I went inside because I was cold and it had started to rain. I finished the background at home. (11" x 14")

"Where the Sun Shines"
I keep trying to decide which part of the year is my favorite--they all have their flavor, and I love them all. Autumn seems to be the season that goes out with a bang--not a whimper--just a blast of color. The Aspen trees in Colorado are magnificent--with the great vistas from mountain to mountain, you can see immense patches of yellow flowing in all directions. Each Aspen grove is its own entity--biological clones from tree to tree, so each grove will turn color at a slightly different time, adding to the color riot. This painting is from the San Juan Mountains in southwestern Colorado--a different perspective.

"Bridge of Trees"
This painting was done on 15 inch X 22.5 inch cold pressed paper with a very small palette of colors. It was done quite hurriedly in about 40 min. It was inspired from a photo taken by my daughter when we drove out for shopping. This road is one which I travel daily for work, and love the way the trees arch and join each other to form a beautiful natural arch, which is all the more attractive when the fall colors appear!

This is a small 5x7 Still Life painted on Illustration Board.

"The Colors of Fall"
This is an 8 by 10 painting done on watercolor
canvas. Painted with Holbein and Winsor-Newton paints. The canvas is very
interesting as it paints a lot like Yupo or hot pressed paper (you can remove
paint by dampening and blotting the paint) After the painting is complete
--- make it permanent by spraying with an acrylic spray. Thus eliminating
the need to frame behind glass.
Thank you Maury for this opportunity to paint another interesting project.

"The Watson Mill Bridge in October"
Please find the Oct - Dec 2007 project submittal
attached. This painting shows The Watson Mill Bridge in Autumn. I used photo's
I had take many years ago. The Bridge is located near Comer, Ga., it's a great
place for painting ideas. This painting was done on W/N CP140# paper (15"X
22") with mainly W/N watercolors and gouache. The title is "The
Watson Mill Bridge in October". Looking forward to next year and new
projects.
Happy New Year to All.

"Three Birches"
Here I am late again. Procrastination seems to be part of getting old, at least in my case. This was painted on a 14"x 20", 140 pound cold pressed Arches pad. It is a scene in Wisconsin. I am looking forward to the next challenge and will try to be more responsive for next year's challenges.

"This watercolor is of Lake Quabbin in Massachusetts. I tried something I hadn't done before with watercolor, and painted free hand, no sketching or masking. It is on 12" X 14" cold pressed paper. The fall colors in the East fascinate me almost as much as the colors in our mountains here in Colorado. There were colors I couldn't even begin to catch. Thank you Maury, for this opportunity to try something new.

Here is my submission for the latest project. Happy New Year to all and thank you for this challenge. If I were to make one resolution, it would be to spend more time learning watercolor. Arches paper, 9x12 cold pressed, 140 lb. Winsor & Newton paint.
