Welcome
to the October -- December 2011 Project. The theme for this quarter is
"Texture." The painting you submit must be painted specifically
for this project and be watermedia. The intent of this project is to do something that uses texture in a significant way. Submit your images to me via email or
snail mail. Send title, size, and comments about the paintings and painting
process. Let me know if it is okay to link your email address when I add your
image to the project page. The project end date is Dec 31, 2011.
The images on this page are protected by copyright

"Untitled"
I send you my first submission. I know it is not a nice painting, you can't even see an object. The meaning of this is, well it has texture, to tell how I did this. Maybe other members like the idea. I painted the paper very wet with watercolor. After that I coverd it with transparant cling film (you cover food with).
Let it dry for a few hours en then lift it. I did the whole paper for the experiment, but you can also do a little section of your painting.
I'm coming from the Netherlands.

"Forest"
I used Halloween spider decoration material spread over the paper and held down on the edges with
masking tape. Wet webbing until very damp and applied heavy thick paint which thinned out on the
paper. I had originally sketched out trees but the webbing and paint did it's own artwork so I went
with the end results. I find it fun to use unusual items to get texture effects especially when you
have great surprises. A.J. Watercolor paints on Arches 140 CP.

Attached is my submission for Texture. I loved this theme and produced several pieces that I might have sent. I settled on First Autumn Snow which is an abstract landscape. My secret weapon on this painting was an 8.5X11 pad of 3M Scotch Brite polishing cloth. It is quite course and almost sponge like. On a hunch I covered it with pigment and dropped it on paper. You see the effects it creates. With this, as in most of my paintings, I start with the colors I want to work with and see where it takes me. I hope people enjoy this. This painting is dominated by the recently introduced DS Quinacridone Purple. I love the violet family so I really love this vibrant transparent color.

This was a lot of fun....will be trying another one soon.
The paper is Jack Richeson 300lb rough. Paints...Maimeri Blue
I really wet the paper....dropped in colors, and tipped the paper to make the colors run. Waited a little while then sprinkled on sea salt and allowed it to dry. Finished with some black pen work.
Have a good day.

"Waiting For Lunch"
The title for this painting is “Waiting for Lunch". The texture was the usual salt, spatter and scratching out. This magnificent bird was painted in a setting in the pacific northwest. I welcome comments.

This painting is of a cliff and sea. The cliff is ultramarine blue and quin burnt orange mingled on the paper then sprinkled with salt. The sky was spritzed with water and the sea was salted, painted over then saran wrap put down for a bit. I think in the future I might add dolphins or a sailboat but it is done for now. Thank you for the opportunity to challenge myself and share with others.

"Frost Windows by Jack"
Maury, a Joyous Holiday Season to you and your family! I thought it about time I submitted something so I can stay on the "A" list! Here is an 11 x 14 inch watercolor mostly transparent but some opaque. I used a piece of plastic wrap to make the frost effect.

"Show Me"
Attached is my painting for the web page. I painted "Show Me", a friend's horse, on Arches paper, 11.5 X 7.5 inches. The texture is in the tail, splatter, and grass scraping. I took the original photo of the horse in the field. I did not have time to attempt a better painting of the horse.

"Ancient Graffiti"
I have attached the final 2011 project, Titled "Ancient Graffiti" done on a quarter sheet of W/N 140# CP
with mostly Da Vinci watercolors and white gouache. Looking forward to 2012's challenges. "Happy New Year"

"Burning Man"
One of my good friends attended the Burning Man Festival this last September. I think they had 60,000 participants gathered in Nevada's Black Rock Desert to create Black Rock City, a community dedicated to art, self-expression, and self-reliance. He took a photo of his boot on the desicated and cracked desert floor. When I saw the photo, I asked if I could use it as a subject for a watercolor painting--he agreed, and this is the result.
